The Alatskivi Manor (Allatskiwwi in German) was first mentioned in 1601. In 1628 Swedish king Gustav Adolf II presented the manor as a gift to his secretary Johan Adler Salviusele. In 1642 the manor was further passed into the possession of Hans Dettermann Cronmann and in 1753 it was bought by Otto Heinrich von Stackelberg.
In 1870 the manor was part of the real estate possessed by the aristocratic von Nolcken family, after which the manor centre was built out in representative style.
As Arved von Nolcken had been greatly inspired by the architecture of Scottland, especially by the royal Balmoral Castle, he decided upon returning from his visit to erect a Balmora copy. The future castle plans were developed by Arved von Nolcken himself, and he also led the building activity. Actually the Alatskivi manorhouse copies design elements of Balmora, but not the room plans – Balmora is much greater in size than Alatskivi. The historical manorhouse was completed in 1885 after 5 years of building.
