Tartu has huge potential and good preconditions to become one of the most important conference tourism centres in Estonia. It is closely linked to the University of Tartu, its higher educational and research institutions; the international and national rsearch events (conferences and colloquia) which take place there. Through its scientists Tartu is represented in numerous international organisations, eg. The University of Tartu is a member of COIMBRA associtaion (unions, associations, societies). Therefore a network exists which can be utilised in developing conference tourism.
Tartu has high scientific potential and Tartu is Estonia's centre for medicine and science. Tartu is home to the 200-year-old University Clinic, the largest complex of hospitals and laboratories. Therefore it is no wonder that Tartu has a tradition of organising medical and biotechnology conferences. For example, the Estonian Genome Project (EGP) is a research venture of Tartu University that is known as the third biggest Genome Project in the world. It should be mentioned that presenters also include Nobel Prize laureates. Two thirds of Estonian botechnology companies and the largest Estonian software companies are based in Tartu.
Tartu is a modern city with a rich historical heritage and culture. It is the cradle of the Estonian Song Festival, Estonian theatre and the Estonian state; Tartu is the intellectual capital of Estonia where national awareness and the culture of Estonia was born. More than 4000 events and festivals are held in Tartu during the year - You can easily find activities for each taste!
Tartu is a compact city and it has "walking culture", which means that You can really walk from one location to another. No need to use public transportation, but walk through the Raekoja square to Your conference location or hotel or any venue You like.
The largest conference sites in Tartu (theatre and concert hall) are situated next to each other and attached to each other. The buildings of the University of Tartu combine ten multifunctional conference sites. A separate mention should be given to the main university hall, able to seat 430 delegates; the University research centre has three conference and seminar rooms of different sizes, which can seat 50-175 delegates. The largest of the University Library seminar rooms is 216 sq m, enabling 200 delegates to be accommodated in theatre style. The white hall of the University History Museum has a historic atmosphere, making it suitable for different receptions and conferences.
Tartu has a total of 37 conference and seminar locations including seating for 8,342 people, 66 seminar rooms.
Largest conference spaces are: Vanemuise Concert Hall 1,000 seats (multifunctional opportunities) Theatre Vanemuine 682 seats; Conference Centre Dorpat with 1100 seats (10 halls all together with 180, 120, 50 and 10 seats). Tartu University conference halls 50 - 430 delegates (TU assembly hall, Biomedicum, Technology Institute, library, hall of the history museum). Dozens of other conference locations, for up to 150 delegates.
Catering Tartu boasts over 200 eateries, including 25 restaurants, 90 cafés and more than 50 bars.
Pre- and post-conference opportunities. Numerous festivals, theatre performances and concerts take place in Tartu; it has also several night clubs.
Tartu has 24 travel agencies, many offering conference services, as well as various packages for tours in the naturally beautiful South Estonia before and after a conference.The Tallinn international airport is located on the edge of that city, on the road to Tartu. The distance between Tallinn airport and Tartu is 180 km. It will take approximately two hours to drive to Tartu, similar to reaching your conference location from the airport in most large cities in the world.
