During 300 years the Hanseatic League dictated trade and life around the Baltic Sea, which was the centre of European trade during the Middle Ages. The cloisters, town halls, town walls, churches and cathedrals of that time speak of the power and wealth of those times. These are memorials symbolizing the spiritual and material strength of power of the Middle Ages.

Red brick is a uniting feature of the towns and individual buildings from the area around the Baltic Sea.

The European Route of Brick Gothic is not only a key to the power and cultural remains of a past age, but also offers the possibility to see the modern life in the seven countries and learn about other peoples and cultures. There are few surviving brick gothic buildings in Estonia, but a couple of pearls are located in Tartu – St. John’s church and the former Dome cathedral.
